ABSTRACT
Two field experiments were carried out in growing seasons 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 to evaluate inter-row hoeing as an alterative weed management system in winter rape. Considering mechanical weed control, the best results were obtained by two-time inter-row hoeing i.e. in autumn and in spring. The inter-row hoeing alone used in autumn at the 4-leaf stage of rape was the least effective among the mechanical weed control methods. There was no differences in the tolerance rape plants to mechanical treatments of weed control both 2004 and 2005 growing seasons. Under normal weather conditions (as in 2005), crop yield was only slightly affected by weed control methods, and all experimental treatments gave similar yields. In contrast, results from second year showed that specific weather conditions can strongly affect the yield of tested control methods. The results of two-year experiments indicate that mechanical weeding in winter oilseed rape can be good tool in weed control strategy when two treatments of inter-row hoeing (one in autumn- at least at the 4 leaf stage and one in spring-after start of vegetation) are made correctly.
