It was estimated that in Europe in the period 1991-2010 the area of agricultural land used by organic farms increased from about 0.4 to 10 m ha. In Poland, the rapid development of organic farming took place just after the integration with the EU. In the years 2004-2012 the number of organic farms increased from 3 760 to 25 944, and the area of agricultural land from 50 to 602 thous. ha. In total, in 2012 organic farms in Poland used 4.3% of agricultural land, and this share ranged from less than 1% in Opolskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Łódzkie voivodeships to 10-15% in the Lubuskie, Warminsko- Mazurskie and Zachodniopomorskie voivodeships. The average area of organic farm amounts 25.5, three times bigger compared to the total farm area in the country. In organic farms about 60% of agricultural land are occupied by fodder crops (permanent grassland and fodder on arable land). The share of orchards is about 12%, which is five times higher than the average for country. However, in these farms the share of cereals, potatoes and vegetables is significantly smaller. The livestock density is on average more than 2-times lower than in Polish agriculture. Due to these factors the volume of organic marketable production is relatively low.
