ABSTRACT
In this paper modified zones as a result of nodular iron laser treatment was presented. Transition and hardened zones were investigated particularly. Slight microhardness scatter in melted zone and significant in transition and hardened zones were showed. Differences in microhardness in transition and hardened zones testify to variety of phases in those zones. Mechanisms of martensite and ledeburite graphite shell in transition zone and martensite graphite shell in hardened zone formation were presented. Furthermore correlation between martensite graphite shell thickness and distance from transition zone was observed.
