ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted in the years 2012-2013 to determine the effect of tillage, including deep strip tillage, shallow
strip tillage and conventional tillage, and weed control method (untreated control, mechanical, chemical) on physical
soil properties in corn planted after winter rye cover crop for forage. Strip tillage was executed with the use of universal
tool for strip tillage and for mechanical interrow cultivation. Cultivated strips were 25 cm wide and 15-20 cm deep in case
of deep strip tillage, and 25 cm wide and 3-5 cm deep at shallow strip tillage. Conventional tillage was performed with
moldboard plough at a depth of 20 cm. Mechanical weeding was also carried out with the use of universal tool for strip tillage
and for mechanical interrow cultivation. On cultivated strip of plot after strip tillage, soil properties were similar to obtained
at conventional tillage, soil bulk density between rows was much higher and total porosity and capillary water capacity
reduced when compared to cultivated strip. Soil temperature was affected by the presence of rye stubble, weed cover,
and mechanical weeding.
