The weed infestation of spring wheat varieties cultivated in organic system

The aim of the research was to compare the competitive ability against weeds of 9 spring wheat varieties: Vinjett, Bombona, Parabola, Tybalt, Nawra, Raweta, Bryza, Zadra, Żura cultivated with undersown crop of small-seeded papilionaceous plants and grasses in organic system. The study was conducted in 2008-2010 at the Experimental Station of Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation - State Research Institute in Osiny (Lublin province) on the experimental fields used in organic system since 1994. The analysis of weed species, number of weeds and their dry matter were done in compared spring wheat varieties before harvest. Number of weeds in spring wheat grown in organic system was 79 to 115 plants/m2, depending of the year, while the dry matter of weeds was more varied, from 7 to 57 g/m2. Bryza and Tybalt were distinguished by the highest level of weed infestation, whereas the smallest number of weeds and their dry matter was recorded in Bombona and Raweta. Chenopodium album and Stellaria media dominated in weed communities.
