ABSTRACT
Aim of this study was to assess the carotenoid content (total carotenoids, β-caroten, lutein), in potato tubers grown in the organic system. Potatoes grown on sandy soil of experimental fields at Jadwisin Department (Mazovia) of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute – National Research Institute in the years 2008-2010. Lutein, whose content for organic tubers ranged from 63-190 μg 100 g-1 of fresh mass was the dominant carotenoid of potatoes. β-caroten content was about five times less than lutein and ranged from 7-35 μg 100 g-1. The carotenoids in potato tubers were differentiated mainly by genotype. Medium late variety Fianna contained total carotenoids most of all: 137.7 and a very early variety Berber – least: 98.3 μg 100 g-1 of fresh mass. Tubers harvested from plots with microorganisms in the soil contained more lutein and total carotenoids than tubers from plots without micro-organisms.
